Add another to the nickname pool.
Rays manager Joe Maddon has never been shy of using nicknames when referring to his players. Ben Zobrist as “Zorilla”, Jeremy Hellickson as “Hellboy or Helli”, Kyle Farnsworth as “Farnsi”, etc. During spring training, we have learned of a new one courtesy of the skipper. That is “J-Mo” for new Rays catcher Jose Molina. Maddon said he envisions “J-Mo” starting 80 – 90 games this season and I’m sure the pitchers do as well. The veteran catcher has not started more that 81 games in a season. Let’s hope he surpasses that.
I am fully aware that the Oakland A’s signed Manny Ramirez a few days back. But in my eyes, what I saw at the time was a pointless move by Oakland in the singing of the consistently juiced up slugger. However I did think of something that got me to this point. Manny only signed for $500,000, about $1.5 million less than the Rays gave him last year. He retired after the first week before word got out that he was taking performance enhancing drugs again. But the Rays moved on without him. Reached the playoffs without him. He still has to serve a 50 game suspension. He is officially considered a minor leaguer with his contract. Manny being irrelevant. That’s how I see it.
Playboy in the Rays organization?
Not really, but Evan Longoria has confirmed to the Tampa Bay Times that he is dating Playboy model, Jaime Edmondson. She is a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader and according to Longo she ran a fantasy football blog last year, so she apparently knows her sports. They have been seen togther at Lightning games as well as Disney’s Animal Kingdom park.
Let’s hope the third baseman stays focused and healthy throughout the season. We all know how much he enjoys rounding third. On the field that is.
All jokes aside, we wish the new couple lots of happiness.
