It was the return of the 2004 Lightning Stanley Cup goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin. He was not the winning goalie tonight though, as the Bolts got the best of him and the Edmonton Oilers in a shootout to win 3-2.
Dwayne Roloson, who stopped 34 of 36 shots, stopped 15 shots alone in the first period as the Lightning were outshot 15-7.
Tom Pyatt opened the scoring with a shot that beat Khabibulin in the second period that put the Bolts out in front 1-0. Later in the second, Edmonton’s Linus Omark earned his third goal of the year to tie it at one. Pyatt would later get credited for a goal that was tipped in off his skate to put the Lightning ahead 2-1.
The shootout would go six rounds where Teddy Purcell got the puck in net passed Khabibulin for the winning shootout goal.
As the game opened, a brief video tribute dating back to the Stanley Cup victory was played to honor Nikolai Khabibulin on Lightning Vision at the forum. Classy move by the Tampa bay Lightning organization.
