Gameday Outlook: Bucs Vs. Panthers

Game one of the Bucs regular season has finally arrived. There is no better way to open a schedule than to kickoff against a division rival that stars one of the most exciting players in the game today. Here are a few keys to today’s game that can have the Bucs send Carolina away with a loss.

Contain Cam Newton

This is a no-brainer. Against the Buccaneers last season, Cam Newton had a total of eight touchdowns (four passing, four rushing), 375 yards passing, 119 yards rushing, and no interceptions. If Tampa Bay can manage to spy on Newton while holding the receivers, his day should be limited, at least through the air.

One less running back to worry about.

Carolina will be without running back Jonathan Stewart. He rushed 21 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns (one receiving) against the Bucs last season. The Panthers will still have DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert running against the Buccaneers’ defense. However, the absence of Stewart leaves the Bucs’ defense breathing a tad-bit easier.

Keep that Carolina offense off the field.

With all the problems the Bucs’ defense faced last year, there are still lots question marks even with a new defense installed. So what may be the best defense? The Buccaneers’ offense. The Buccaneers will have there own two-headed monster in the backfield this season with LeGarrette Blount and Doug Martin. Head Coach Greg Schiano has made it known he wants to run the ball often. If they can control the clock and have success against the Panthers’ defense that has it’s own question marks, their chances for a win are very good.
