Newly acquired running back Jeff Demps has received a lot of negative feedback regarding his decision to put his track and field life before football. After being traded to the Bucs in April, many fans and the media wondered whether or not the former Florida Gator speedster would decide to play for Tampa Bay.
Appearing on the David Baumann Show on 1040am and 1080am on Tuesday, Demps is still heavily leaning towards the track life:
I haven’t really decided yet because all my focus is on track and field, but once the season is over I’ll sit with my track trainer and then to talk with the Bucs and see if we can get a deal worked out or get things situated, but like I said, as far as right now, all the focus is on track and then after the season I’m pretty sure I’ll know more about it.
Demps would also mention in the interview that he and the Bucs have been communicating and both sides are aware of one another’s plans/intentions.
At this point of the offseason, the Bucs are not wasting their time with Demps. In fact, and as Sports Talk Florida’s Jenna Laine points out, he is not holding the Bucs to a roster spot.
You have to tip your hat to Demps. He is focused on one goal right now — the Olympics — and seems poised in achieving it. But if the Bucs are fortunate enough to obtain Demps’ skills and ability for the season, they have their return man — as well as a potential offensive weapon.
