The Bucs are two days into their mini-camp practices at One Buc Place but head coach Lovie Smith is talking as if the team is set to hit the regular season schedule tomorrow. Especially running back Doug Martin.
Martin suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the team’s Week 7 loss to the Falcons in Atlanta last season, sidelining him for the rest of the season. So far, Martin has impressed his coaches and is out on the practice fields like nothing ever happened to him.
“Is he coming off of an injury? Can’t really tell,” Smith said. “He is on everything, taken every rep we’ve asked him to. Doug has been around here rehabbing an awful lot But to finally see him on the football field, you know he’s compact and he runs downhill an awful lot. But the wiggle that he has of making people miss in the open field, happy guy, likes being around and takes coaching.”
Smith would add that they would definitely run the ball in their offense and referred to Martin and Bobby Rainey as being the “bell cows” of the running attack.
This is certainly encouraging news. Having Martin back out on the practice field is certainly a positive. And even though these are non-contact practices, his medical clearance means it’ll be perfectly fine for him to take hits. It’s only a matter of time for that.
