On Monday, the Buccaneers held a press conference to formally announce the extension they and linebacker Lavonte David agreed upon.
As you can imagine, David received praise from general manager Jason Licht as well as head coach Lovie Smith and for all the right reasons. David took in all the praise as humbled as he’s always been and didn’t shy away from expressing his smile when answering certain questions.
But it wasn’t all about how the team viewed the decision to extend David as a no-brainer. Plans on how the team will soon use David were teased, courtesy of Smith.
“He’s been in this system a little over a year and he’s almost like a coach already, knowing exactly what we should call in every situation,” Smith said. “The sky really is the limit for him. We’re just looking forward to doing some more things with him this year, more than we’ve done at that position in the past.”
We don’t know exactly what those things will be just yet. Last season, David did experience some troubles — albeit minor — as he adjusted to Lovie Smith’s style of defense. Some folks that TheBayCave.com spoke with last season suggested David’s best suited for the type of defense former head coach Greg Schiano was implementing but that quickly changed as the 2014 season progressed.
With that said, David finished with yet another productive season despite missing two games due to injury. But individual success is not want David prides himself on. He prides himself on winning as a team.
“We all have that competitive nature that we want to win,” David said. “If you walk around the locker room, you can see it in guys. You can see it out at practice, guys want to be the best that they can be. We want to bring a winning mindset back to this organization. We have the guys to do it. We have the coaches to help us. Hopefully it happens very soon, but the sky is the limit for us, the way things have been looking.”
