After I published my open letter to the Grimes family early Friday morning, the feedback was pretty much positive, minus the few Miami fans. The majority of the Tampa Bay fan base was pretty excited about the possible acquisition of cornerback Brent Grimes. Nearly four hours later, the team signed him to a two-year deal.
Now, I wouldn’t say my open letter directly influenced the decision. But perhaps it had some effect.
All kidding aside, the news has been we-received for the most part. Some like to call his wife, Miko, baggage and the reason why they should not have made the move. However, the Buccaneers are getting a football player on the field. A player with a type of attitude they have lacked in quite some time.
For those thinking Grimes is done, chew on this for a minute. We all know he is a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback. And heading into last season, he was voted on — by his peers — as a Top 50 player in the entire league. ENTIRE LEAGUE. They ranked him at No. 38.
Yes, 2015 was a down year for the veteran corner but the signing was one that needed to be done to bolster the secondary. Time will tell us which Brent Grimes the Bucs signed.
“Brent is the kind of playmaking defensive back that will make an immediate impact in our secondary,” said Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht said via the team’s press release. “Brent is a four-time Pro Bowler who will come in and provide an immediate upgrade at a position we felt we needed to address this offseason. His familiarity with our defensive system, combined with his aggressive style of play, makes him an ideal fit for us.”
Grimes also released a statement through the team:
“I am very excited to be able to continue my career playing in a defensive system and for a defensive coordinator that I am very familiar with. Tampa Bay has a great core of players on both sides of the ball and I am looking forward to doing what I can to help re-establish the Buccaneers defense as one of the best in the league.”
