Before Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, TheBayCave.com published on article talking about rookie quarterback Jameis Winston needing to step in and become the team’s true leader that it has been lacking. After his performance — albeit inconsistent — one thing became apparent during their 23-20 victory. And that is that Winston may have officially dethroned defensive tackle Gerald McCoy as the team’s true captain.
His pregame speech was as motivational as they come. When was the last time a player wearing pewter hyped the team up with so much intensity? Would probably have to think back to the Sapp, Brooks, Barber and Lynch era.
But Winston has already evolved into the leader of this team as general manager Jason Licht tells Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks on their podcast Move the Sticks.
“Everybody here in the building feels it. He’s a winner. He’s a natural leader. He’s incredibly smart. One of the smartest young quarterbacks — maybe the smartest young quarterback I’ve ever been around at this stage and the hardest worker on the team. The team already knows he’s the leader.”
Many people — including TBC — have always raved about Winston’s leadership ability and seven games into his young NFL career, the masses are finally seeing it as well.
With all the talk from McCoy not letting him be the leader he needs to be, Winston is obviously still going about it because he is a natural. He deserves the role and it’s apparent players are starting to feed off of his energy.
