The annual NFL Network top 100 players list continued to be revealed on Wednesday night, and a second Buccaneer landed on the list. Last week Gerald McCoy came in at number 63, and this week Lavonte David landed at number 53. David rose three spots from his 56th ranking last season. It’s his third time making the list.
In the segment Gerald McCoy praised his teammate and detailed the player that every Buccaneer fan has come to love over the last four seasons; an uber-athletic, instinctual playmaker on defense that can get sideline to sideline in the blink of an eye and blow up plays behind the line of scrimmage. On last week’s top 100, Jameis Winston described Gerald McCoy as “the Hulk”, and this week McCoy stuck to the super hero theme, tabbing Lavonte David as “the Flash”.
David started the 2015 season curiously slow, but before long was back to his normal self, flying around the field and making plays. His best game came against the Philadelphia Eagles where he registered two interceptions, including the first pick-six of his career, in which he took a Mark Sanchez screen pass into the Philly endzone. In a crucial game against the rival Falcons, David registered a game-sealing interception off of Matt Ryan. David had the fewest total tackles of his career in 2015, but through four seasons David has more tackles than Buccaneer great Derrick Brooks had at this same point in his career.
The Bucs roster is filled with young, unproven players brimming with potential, but David is unique in that he has been-there-done-that, and has already established himself as a star in the NFL. With the help of an experienced, aggressive and flexible defensive coordinator in Mike Smith, David should continue to build on his impressive resume, and will hopefully tack on some wins as well.
