Report: Bucs’ Akeem Spence arrested (Update)

Well this isn’t a good first impression to the new regime by a young Buccaneer. According to a report, Bucs defensive tackle Akeem Spence was arrested late Thursday afternoon on drug charges.

NorthEscambia.com has the story.

Spence was stopped by an Alabama State Trooper who clocked him in excess of 100 mph. A search of his vehicle by a law enforcement K-9 located an unspecified amount of marijuana in his vehicle, according to authorities.

The 22-year old Spence was booked into the Escambia County (Ala.) Detention Center on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was released shortly after his arrest on a $3,000 bond.

That is certainly not good news for the Bucs 2013 fourth-rounder out of Illinois.

TBC is working to confirm the report and will provide updates as they become available.

Update: The Alabama Highway Patrol Division has confirmed with TheBayCave.com of the report being true. Spence was in fact booked and released on a misdemeanor charge for drug possession.

Head Coach Lovie Smith released a statement on the matter (via Rick Brown of the Lakeland Ledger):

“We have been informed of the situation involving Akeem Spence and are working with local authorities to get additional information,” said Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith in a statement released by the team. “We will wait to get all the facts, but the initial reports are concerning and disappointing. I have spoken with Akeem and expressed my dissatisfaction with his involvement in this situation. As a member of the Buccaneers, he will be held to the high standards we have set for all members of this organization.”
