Some Bucs pre-free agency tidbits 2.0

Teams have made some cuts across the NFL and the Bucs are currently sitting back watching it all unfold. They still have time to make decisions, especially since free agency doesn’t start until March 10. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t making some headlines.

Trent Cole

The Philadelphia Eagles released edge rusher Trent Cole earlier this week. He was quickly labeled as an option for the Buccaneers and sure enough they had him in town for a visit.

A report surfaced on Friday saying that if Cole left without a deal Friday, he would visit the Indianapolis Colts next week with the 49ers also having interest. Well, he has left and may continue his free agency tour elsewhere.

Mike Iupati, Willie Colon, and Greg Hardy

The Bucs are expected to go after a couple big names during the free agency period and ESPN’s Matt Williamson sees the Bucs going after defensive end Greg Hardy and guards Willie Colon and Mike Iupati. There were earlier reports to match the insight from Williamson on Iupati saying that the Bucs will have heavy interest in the veteran lineman.

Safety Valves?

Free agent Devin McCourty, a name many feel the Bucs should make a strong run for, is drawing heavy interest from the Philadelaphia Eagles and the New York Giants. Tampa Bay may find themselves in a bidding war if they do try to go after the talented safety.

A higher possibility may be Bears’ safety Chris Conte who is familiar with Lovie Smith’s defense due to his time with Chicago. Yahoo!’s Rand Getlin expects the Bucs to make a play for the 26-year old safety.

Draft Rumblings

The Buccaneers entertained potential draft pick Jameis Winston this week and the Florida State product met with wide receiver Vincent Jackson, general manager Jason Licht, and head coach Lovie Smith among some others on staff.

The team released several photos and videos of their meet and greet and on Friday released the behind the scenes footage of Winston’s visit. The video included shots of Winston touring the practice facility and talking with Licht. The Bucs’ general manager said some interesting things to say in the video. (h/t BucsBlitz.com)

“He’s lively. He’s engaging. He’s incredibly smart. He confirmed all the things we thought about him going into this process, but the process isn’t done.”

The Bucs are well into their scouting process as they had eyes at the pro days for Mississippi State and Ole Miss this week.
