Before the fanbase gets all bent out of shape that Bucs’ rookie quarterback Jameis Winston was talking up Mike Glennon as he worked with the second-team offense, keep in mind these are just OTAs.
Winston has, for the most part, been working with the first-team offense throughout OTAs to this point. He did get some work in with receivers on some route throws today, including Vincent Jackson. But most of the work came with the second-team. It was a decision that Winston said helps as he learns from Glennon.
“Being able to develop a relationship is important. Just watching Mike, seeing some of the things he does. I’ve been trying to pick everything he has, because he has been doing great,” Winston said. “I look up to him and the things he does are magnificent. I try to always compete. It’s always good to have a great guy in front of you and it’s just helps you push yourself.”
Head coach Lovie Smith reassured everyone that putting Winston with the second-tier guys today was merely to give reps to other players.
“Jameis is getting his first team reps,” Smith said. “You guys are here on Thursday. There’s Wednesday and he was with the first group then. Don’t look too much into that. We just want the guys that we think can play to get reps and we want them to work with a lot of different combinations, not just the quarterback position, but throughout. Jameis is right on schedule.”
And so are the Bucs. They wrap up their OTA scheduled practices next week before getting into mini-camp practices the following week.
